Did you know that upwards of 50% of patients experience orthodontic relapse? This is the phenomenon where teeth begin to move out of their properly aligned positions in the months or years after braces. Fortunately, there’s an orthodontic appliance that can help prevent that from happening: a retainer. So, make sure to wear it every night while you sleep and replace it as needed. If you’re unsure how often you should replace your retainer, simply read on!
First, How Long Do Retainers Usually Last?
Typically, retainers last between five and 10 years. The best way to prolong the lifespan of yours is by caring for it properly. More specifically, patients are encouraged to:
- Remove their retainer before eating or drinking anything other than water
- Use a soft-bristled toothbrush to clean it each morning and night
- Place it in its designated case when you aren’t wearing it
- Soak it in a dentist-recommended cleaner periodically for a deeper clean
Warning Signs That It’s Time to Replace Your Retainer
It’s important to dedicate some time each morning and evening to inspecting your retainer. If you notice that there are small cracks or chips on the surface, then you should call your orthodontist right away to see if they can repair it. It’s also important to give them a call if there is calcium buildup or an unpleasant odor that’s preventing you from wearing them as directed. Last, but certainly not least, schedule an appointment if yours no longer fits or you accidentally lost it.
Can I Get Braces a Second Time?
If your retainer was lost or damaged, leading to you not wearing it as instructed, your teeth may no longer be in their perfectly aligned positions. Don’t worry – that doesn’t mean having a straight smile again is out of reach. In fact, many patients undergo orthodontic treatment a second time! So, don’t hesitate to schedule a consultation with your orthodontist. Once they have a chance to complete a comprehensive oral exam, they can determine if you’re a good candidate and, if you are, begin working on your custom treatment plan.
